Pet Diagnostics in Maple Ridge, BC

Accurate diagnostics are the foundation of effective veterinary care. At Haney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge, BC, our in-house diagnostic equipment allows us to run most tests during your pet’s visit and receive results quickly. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Blood Panels and Complete Blood Count

A complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry panel provide a detailed picture of your pet’s internal health. The CBC measures red and white blood cells, platelets, and other markers that help identify infection, anemia, immune system changes, and bleeding disorders. The chemistry panel evaluates organ function, including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, as well as blood glucose and protein levels. We run blood panels for wellness screening, pre-anesthetic evaluation before any procedure, and when your pet is unwell and we need to understand what is happening internally.

Digital X-Ray

Our digital radiology equipment produces high-resolution images of your pet’s bones, chest, and abdomen. X-rays are used to identify fractures, joint changes, lung disease, heart size, foreign objects, urinary stones, intestinal obstructions, and abdominal organ changes. Digital imaging allows us to view, magnify, and share images immediately, without the delays and handling involved with traditional film. For most pets, X-rays are completed quickly and without sedation, though we use gentle restraint or sedation when needed to get accurate images.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging gives us a real-time view of your pet’s internal organs without radiation. It is particularly useful for evaluating the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs. We use ultrasound to assess organ size and texture, detect fluid accumulation, identify masses, and guide the collection of tissue or fluid samples. For cardiac assessments requiring a full echocardiogram, we work with a visiting veterinary specialist who attends our clinic by appointment. Pre-booking is required for echocardiogram appointments.

Urinalysis, Snap Testing, and Fecal Testing

Urinalysis evaluates kidney function, detects urinary tract infections, and screens for diabetes and other metabolic conditions. Snap tests provide rapid results for conditions including parvovirus in dogs, feline leukemia virus and FIV in cats, and pancreatitis in both species. Fecal testing detects intestinal parasites including roundworms, hookworms, Giardia, and coccidia, allowing us to confirm parasite status and assess whether deworming has been effective. These tests are available at any visit and are routinely included in puppy, kitten, and senior wellness appointments.

Specialized Diagnostics

We offer a range of additional in-house diagnostic options, including skin scraping for mange and fungal conditions, ear cytology for infection typing, endocrinology panels for diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, and thyroid disorders, progesterone testing for breeding timing, and histopathology for tissue biopsy analysis. Clotting factor diagnostics assess bleeding disorders, titer tests measure immunity levels, and tonometry measures eye pressure to screen for glaucoma. A mobile ECHO and abdominal ultrasound service is available by appointment through a visiting specialist. Geriatric panels provide comprehensive screening for older pets and are recommended at least annually for dogs and cats over seven years of age.

FAQs

Does my pet need to fast before a blood test at Haney Animal Hospital?
For most routine blood panels, we recommend fasting your pet for 8 to 12 hours before the appointment. This is particularly important for blood glucose and lipid measurements, which can be affected by a recent meal. Call us at (604) 476-2525 and we will advise you based on what test is being run and your pet’s health status.
How long does it take to get blood test results for my dog or cat?
Most in-house blood panels and snap tests produce results within the same visit. Samples sent to an external laboratory, such as histopathology or some hormone panels, typically return within two to five business days. We will let you know the expected timeline when we collect the sample.
What is a geriatric panel and when does my pet need one?
A geriatric panel is a comprehensive blood and urine screening designed for older pets. It assesses organ function, thyroid levels, blood cell counts, and other markers that tend to shift as pets age. We generally recommend geriatric panels annually for dogs and cats over seven years of age, or sooner if your pet has known health concerns.
Can Haney Animal Hospital do an ultrasound on my pet the same day?
In-house abdominal ultrasound is available by appointment during regular clinic hours. Full echocardiograms require a visiting specialist and need to be booked in advance. Call us at (604) 476-2525 to check availability and schedule the right imaging for your pet’s situation.
